Amanda Carney, Lead Teacher

Amanda has been teaching at BOPN since 2023. She is teaching at Wolbach Farm (Sudbury) for summer 2024 and at Pine Banks Park (Malden) for school year 2024 - 2025.

As a dedicated and passionate educator, my journey in early childhood education is deeply rooted in personal and professional experiences. Being a mother to a spirited 5-year-old has been a cornerstone of my understanding and appreciation for early childhood development. This hands-on experience is complemented by my early start in high school, where I took on babysitting roles that provided valuable insights into nurturing and caring for young children.

My connection with BOPN began when I was searching for a nature-based preschool for my son. He spent a transformative year at BOPN before I joined the teaching team; witnessing his growth and joy in such an enriching environment inspired me to become a part of this wonderful community! Approaching my one-year anniversary at BOPN in June 2024 is a meaningful milestone, marking a period filled with growth, learning, and the joy of seeing young minds flourish.

My educational background includes a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, which has equipped me with essential organizational and planning skills, seamlessly integrated into my role as a Lead Teacher. I am currently pursuing a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential through Neighborhood Villages, a year-long journey that deepens my understanding of children’s holistic development. The invaluable guidance from seasoned BOPN teachers has profoundly shaped my approach to teaching outdoors.

Growing up in the Midwest, I developed a deep-rooted connection to nature, which was further enriched by diverse experiences. From volunteering as a farmhand at an upstate NY sanctuary to exploring the coastal wonders of Big Sur and climbing Mt. Tamalpais in California, these adventures reignited my passion for the natural world. Participation in Mass Audubon’s master naturalist certificate program has connected me with like-minded individuals and reaffirmed the profound purpose of outdoor education.

In my role at BOPN, I am committed to creating enriching, nature-based learning experiences that foster curiosity, empathy, and a lifelong love for the natural world.
